National Tree Planting Day
National Tree Planting Day in Zimbabwe is observed annually on the first Saturday of December, marking the beginning of the tree planting season. This initiative
underscores the importance of reforestation and environmental conservation. The Deposit Protection Corporation (DPC) fully supports this initiative and to this
end, the Corporation purchased tree seedlings that were distributed to staff and members of the community so as to encourage everyone to play a part in the reforestation drive. DPC CEO Mr Hopewell Zinyau and his Executive Committee yesterday planted trees at the DPC Borrowdale offices to kickstart the tree planting initiative. All staff members were give tree seedlings to plant at home, churches and community areas and help green the environment. This demonstrates DPC’s commitment to environmental sustainability, community involvement, and raising awareness about environmental issues. The tree of the year is called the Rauvolfia caffra commonly known as the quinine tree. Other tree seedlings purchased included the red mahogany, waterberry (muhute), lemon and avocado. These trees were selected because of their important food and medicinal properties.
ENVIRONMENTAL WALKATHON
To reinforce DPC’s commitment to environmental conservation and drive brand visibility, the DPC sponsored eight staff members who volunteered to participate in the
Friends of the Environment (FOTE) walkathon from Mutare to Chipinge from the 4th to 7th of December 2024. Different companies joined hands for this walkathon with
the objective to raise awareness on the importance of planting trees. Participants were planting trees in selected schools and centres, with the commissioning of Mafumise
Secondary School Tree Seedling Nursery set for Saturday 7 December 2024, which is the National Tree Planting Day.
DPC’s involvement in these events reflects its commitment to corporate social responsibility, environmental stewardship, driving brand visibility and contributing to Zimbabwe’s broader reforestation goals.
