13 March 2026 – The Deposit Protection Corporation (DPC) handed over essential hampers to individuals with disabilities at Mushawedu Housing Cooperative in Tafara, Harare. The event was attended by DPC staff members along with over 300 members of the Mushawedu Cooperative, demonstrating a strong sense of unity and shared purpose.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Hopewell Zinyau, DPC Corporate Secretary Ms. Kiitu Zawanda emphasized DPC’s broader commitment to community well-being, stating:
“While our mandate is to protect depositors’ money, we believe our responsibility goes beyond financial protection to supporting communities and improving people’s lives.”
This initiative reflects DPC’s dedication to promoting financial inclusion, extending support to vulnerable groups, and fostering empowerment within communities often overlooked.
Mushawedu Cooperative: A Community Built on Inclusion and Resilience
Founded in 2007 and officially registered in 2009, Mushawedu Cooperative was created with a powerful mission: to provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for people living with disabilities. Over the years, the Cooperative has grown into a symbol of dignity, unity, and empowerment, offering housing and a real sense of belonging to individuals who might otherwise face social and economic barriers.
Many members of the Cooperative earn a livelihood through small-scale enterprises such as airtime wholesale distribution and clothing sales. Despite limited resources, the community continues to demonstrate exceptional resilience, resourcefulness, and determination.
A Vision for Sustainable Livelihoods
Although many members survive through small informal businesses, Mushawedu’s ambitions extend far deeper. The Cooperative seeks to establish a sustainable income-generating project capable of uplifting the entire community. Such a project would strengthen economic stability, empower members, and provide opportunities for more individuals living with disabilities.
Mushawedu stands as more than a housing initiative; it is a movement for inclusion, independence, and shared progress.
